November 2010

Rig-A-Jig Jig

Listen to the whole song on Baloney!, or hear it here:

For those of us in cold weather climates, we may be spending more time indoors in November. BUT we still need to move our bodies, enjoy rhythm, and continue to practice self-control. Rig-A-Jig Jig is a great song for all of these things! All you need is some open space.

Galloping is a skill that takes some practice. If you intend to use my recording, please work with your child(ren) to teach them how to gallop: put one foot in front, keeping it there as you "run" around the room. Start slowly. Then you're ready to start singing – walking with the verse, then galloping with the chorus. Have fun – this will get the energy going!

Lyrics:

As I was walking down the street
Down the street, down the street
A pretty girl I chanced to meet,
Hi ho, hi ho, hi ho!

chorus:
Rig-a-jig jig and away we go
Away we go, away we go
Rig-a-jig jig and away we go
Hi ho, hi ho, hi ho!

As I was walking down the street
Down the street, down the street
A handsome boy I chanced to meet,
Hi ho, hi ho, hi ho!

Repeat chorus. Then repeat verses, or make up your own a smiling man, a happy mom, a little dog...whatever you like. Always end with going back to walking to bring the energy level down a notch before going on to your next activity.

Movements:

During the verses, walk in time with the music. During the choruses, gallop!

Age Range: 2 - 6 years old (yes, many 2's can gallop!)

Purpose: aerobic exercise, walking with the beat, to practice galloping
